About

Born in 1973 in the Tseshaht Nation territory of Port Alberni, British Columbia, Ivan Thomas is an acclaimed Nuu-chah-nulth jewelry artist whose work is recognized for its masterful carving, exceptional craftsmanship, and innovative approach to Northwest Coast design.

Growing up surrounded by respected Northwest Coast artists, Ivan developed a deep appreciation for Indigenous art at an early age. His mother, an art gallery owner, fostered his creative interests and encouraged his pursuit of the arts. He later apprenticed under Master Carver Derek Wilson, while also drawing inspiration from influential artists including Patrick Amos, Ron Hamilton, Art Thompson, and the late Bill Reid.

In 1992, Ivan moved to Vancouver and became part of the vibrant Indigenous arts community on Granville Island. There, he continued to refine his distinctive style, building a reputation for intricately carved gold and silver jewelry that reflects both technical excellence and cultural authenticity.

Today, Ivan's work bridges tradition and innovation. Rooted in the artistic teachings of the Nuu-chah-nulth people, his jewelry explores new possibilities within Northwest Coast formline design while honouring the stories, values, and cultural legacy that inspire each piece. Every creation reflects a commitment to craftsmanship, creativity, and the living traditions of his ancestors.
